esther ofarim - In London

Produced by Bob Johnston, a figure responsible for some of the great CBS LPs of the 1960s (works by Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Johnny Cash and Simon & Garfunkel), In London finds renowned Israeli singer Esther Ofarim recording with a full orchestra in the English capital. Originally released in 1972, this album still sounds incredibly rich, setting grand string and horn arrangements against her quiet, unwaveringly flawless delivery. The tracklist is made up from a number of well-known folk songs, but it's Ofarim's affinity with Leonard Cohen's music that stands out the most here, and her renditions of 'Suzanne' and 'Hey, That's No Way To Say Goodbye' prove to be especially memorable, with the former surely ranking as one of the most spine-tinglingly beautiful Cohen covers ever committed to record. This great reissue comes with sleeve notes, rare photos and an interview with Ofarim, plus two bonus tracks from 1973.
